Last week, I attended the German Sociological Foundation's biannual congress - this year under the topic "Futures of Society". It was a fantastically rich and diverse set of panels, sessions and discussions.

In particular, I enjoyed the discussion of our ad-hoc group on the topic "beyond sustainability: futures of socio-ecological justice", convened by Maria Backhouse, Dennis Eversberg, Matthias Schmelzer and Bernd Sommer. Based on my research in wildifre-affected communities in southeast Australia, I presented my conceptualisation of non-sustainability as 'conflicts of care'. Other contributions included Dennis Eversberg's conceptual considerations on socio-ecological justice beyond the sustainability paradigm, Simon Schaupp's work at the intersection of labour identification and alienation under the ecological crisis, Nils Richterich's case study of rights of nature as technologices of socio-ecological justice at the Mar Menor, and Milena Hödt' and Carla Koppe's research on communication strategies in solidary collapse imaginaries among climate activists.

It was also great to hear new developments from the working groups on human-animal studies and the sociology of sustainability within the DGS.

More information on the congress and the full programme can be found here.
