Dr. des. Lena Schlegel

Environmental Social Scientist

I am a social scientist doing research at the intersection of society and the environment. In my PhD at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society at Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, I explored  nature-society relations and their transformation in the aftermath of the 2019-20 Australian Black Summer Bushfires. My research is highly interdisciplinary, based at the interface of sociology, anthropology, geography and ethics. I am particularly interested in relational approaches to societal organisation including feminist new materialisms and care. I have extensive experience with empirical research, spanning traditional methods of qualitative inquiry such as interviews, focus groups and participant observation to novel and experiemental methods such as multispecies ethnography, visual methods and creative writing. I have also worked in research projects on global health, environmental ethics and science and technology studies. My teaching portfolio covers lectures, seminars and field classes in political science, sociology and geography at both graduate and undergraduate levels. I also engage in public talks and creative outreach.
